Most difficult part of a Gas pipeline network operator may be detecting leaks in time & constantly carrying out surveillance over the Network. Tunable Diode Laser Spectroscopy help detect methane leaks from Natural Gas to the sensitivity of 1ppm. Moreover, the tunable diode assists in detecting only CH4, leaving other Hydrocarbon and achieve high accuracy in leaks of CH4.

Understanding Software efficacy

The Laser in specific wavelength, being absorbed by the CH4 in the sampling chamber & is evaluated against a reference gas is inducing the detection & being recorded in the Propreitary software run in the Laptop mounted inside a vehicle.

LEL is not specified for CH4 but NIOSH says TLV as 1000 ppm.Because CH4 is highly flammable in the concentration of 5% - 15%, it is mandatory to monitor its presence all along pipeline during transportation to avoid any major accidents. Moreover, it asphyxiates potentially the environment & causes unconsciousness if not checked its concentration.

Nevertheless, the leaks from pipeline transportation adds additional CH4, besides what's added in atmosphere through other sources & thereby increasing the global warming. Certainly ,this impels everyone to control the presence of CH4 in the Industry as a measure to increase Environment Awareness & to reduce its emission through leaks, discharge through flares etc.
